From mountains to memorials

A learning resource drawn from the graphic novel Making the Shrine: stories from Victoria’s war memorial.

This resource looks at two key Victorian memorials of national significance - the Shrine of Remembrance and Kings Domain Resting Place. Located close together on the lands of the Wurundjeri woi-wurrung people, both are memorials to harrowing experiences of loss in Australian history, and both are constructed of Victorian granite, chosen for its permanence and relationship to place, extracted from sites on the south-eastern tail of the Great Dividing Range.

The resource engages students in examining Victorian landforms and landscapes and in exploring the cultural significance and environmental sustainability of sources of quarried stone in Victoria. It’s designed to be freely remixed and adapted by teachers and has multiple touchpoints with the Year 7-8 Geography and History Victorian curriculums.
